Route 35 with the 4 Road Queens

February 24, 2016

Departed from Minnesota on our road trip at 745AM with a temperature of 34 degrees.  Not much snow, lots of brown ground until we reached Lebo, Kansas (our first sign of green grass).  Emporia, Kansas showed us an open lake (no ice)!  As we traveled the temperature gradually rose until we reached a high of 56 degrees in Wichita (arrival at 545PM).  Judy entertained us along the way in being a “truck stalker”.  Our first overnight at the Kansas Star Casino was with a little dinner, a little gambling and a little rest for our next day of travel.

We took off from our hotel around 1015AM (temperature 39 degrees) and head off for Oklahoma City to see the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.  We had a 2 hour drive ahead of us to get to our destination.  We were all very impressed with what they had created for a remembrance for the families, the community, as well as the country.  They had a field of 168 empty chairs depicting the lives lost (smaller one for the children) and placed according to where they were in the building at the time of the explosion.  The chairs overlook a reflection pool and they are all individually lit at night.  The survivor wall lists those that were impacted by this horrific event (many with serious injuries).  The survivor tree (90+ year-old American Elm) stands as a profound symbol of human resilience.

“We come here to remember”

We stopped for lunch at a restaurant named Braums and it was part grocery store (very fresh food and ice cream) along with a fast food restaurant.  The food was very good and “no” we did not try the ice cream.
It is still not warm enough for that!

As we pass through the states we saw numerous wind turbine farms.   It was very windy, so even though the temperature here is warmer, it is still cold.  We are still heading for warmer weather!  We planned to stop and see the Cadillac Ranch (located on 40 frontage road), but we must have passed it without locating it.  I guess it will be saved for another trip.

Our weather lady (Rose) informed us that our high today was 54 degrees.

An overnight in Tucumcari and tomorrow Santa Fe!
